crafty

Today I bought a wool sweater for 50 cents at a yard sale and felted it, just to see how it would go - and as a possible first step toward the awesomest blanket in the world. See how it came out, all fuzzy and squishy and cute? But here's the thing: it's totally heavy.

To reinforce this message, my dad showed me one of the felted goat hair poncho things they brought back from Nepal 35 years ago, and it, too, weighs a million pounds. Ok, a thousand. Ok, let's just say it weighs a lot. So I came to this epiphany: a whole blanket made of felt would weigh a freaking TON.

This means it's time to think up alternate felt crafts. I think this purse is pretty cute. As are these mittens. Any other suggestions?

Good thing you changed your mind. I can see the headline now: "SCIENCE WRITER CRUSHED TO DEATH UNDER HER OWN QUILT - SCIENTISTS TAKE SAMPLES OF MATERIAL FOR USE AS ARMOR PLATING".

Now, if you make a purse or something, not only will it hold stuff but it'll also be bulletproof! Of course, you might run into problems at the airport if it turns out to be too dence for x-rays to penetrate...

"I'm so cold that I lack the strength to cover myself in this quilt" - it's the kind of drama great black-and-white German films are made of.

Yeah, yeah, but you just buy it by the yard. That's no fun. I'm all about felting the sweaters!

I accidentally felted my favorite sweater which was hiding in my laundry bin.

I have another idea - how about Tyvek? It's lightweight and waterproof, and they make jackets out of it. And most excitingly, you could make the entire quilt out of free USPS Priority Mail envelopes!
