astronomy tip of the day

If you haven't already seen the comet that's burning up the night sky, check it out tonight! It's ridiculously easy to find, if you can find Cassiopeia (the big "W" near the north star) in the evening - just look a bit down and to the right and there's a superobvious isosceles triangle, and when you look at it you think, that's funny, the star in the lower left corner of that triangle is fuzzy. And that's because it's not a star, it's comet Holmes.

Here, study this map and it will all make sense: map from Sky and Telescope.

I wrote about the book Lucifer's Hammer in the post-apocalyptic fiction post - it's come true! It's the Hammer! Start getting used to the taste of human meat!

Now, are you saying "it's Comet, Holmes!" like you're all ghetto, yo?

Or is it The Comet Holmes...like the Dread Pirate Roberts?
