Here, have some more pictures of Bryggen, the old warehouses in Bergen.
These posts are from one of the earliest incarnations of Bryggen - the burn marks are from a fire in the eleven-freaking hundreds. That's old. The Bryggen Museum was built over this archaeological site. It's a couple hundred feet back from the water's edge, but these warehouses were hanging over the water when they were built.
Here's one of the alleys between the modern buildings. I say modern, and there have been a lot of fires, most recently in the 1950s, but a lot of the structures must have made it through the fires. I just don't think wood buildings go that out of whack in just 50 years. (These two aren't so bad, but some of them looked like they were about to lean over into their neighbors.)
