yet another scarf

When in doubt, post a picture of a scarf, that's my motto. This is for a friend of mine (SeaCap) who's having a baby, so I'm sending her a baby blanket but also decided she also needs a scarf. (Everybody needs a scarf.) Never mind that she lives in Santa Barbara. And of course, I felt this scarf should have a picture of the organism she did part of her thesis on. Can you identify it?

At first I thought it was just a potato, then maybe some sort of crustacean - either way, though, far below my high post-dinosaur expectations. But now that it has a story behind it, I'm impressed again.

It looks like a biscuit to me. Yummy!

Oop. I thought the row of holes would definitely give it away. Anyone? Anyone?

hmm. i'm going to guess and say it's some sort of mollusk. then again, i only made it about 3 weeks as a biology major before i realized i enjoyed WRITING the labs more than actually DOING the labs. :)
