scarf answer
So, remember that scarf I posted a picture of a while ago and you were trying to guess what it was and you were so wrong? Here it is, so you can refresh your memory. Ok, got that? Now look at this picture. Actually, E.C. wasn't wrong at all, although her answer lacked specificity. She had the right phylum. Way to go, E.C.!

now for the question of the day: is it officially pronounced "abaloan" or "abaloney?" i've heard both.
It's AB-a-lone-ee. I've never heard "abaloan," and neither has my Webster's.
i should have known . . . it was the guys in the guitar shop calling it "abaloan" when referencing its use as inlays on fretboards.
next time, i listen to the scientists.
