Tonight Miss S and I went to a Norwegian folk dancing party. This is rockin' hardanger fiddle player Loretta Kelley - completely un-Norwegian name, yes, but highly skilled in the ways of Norwegian fiddling - playing a hallingspringar in the dance room at the back of her house. Miss S and I sat this one out, because they only taught the telespringar and the ganger in the lesson.
The telespringar and the gangar are both couple dances with a lot of turning and a lot of opportunities for the men to show off. I'd seen both dances in the show, and I'd danced both at parties while the Norwegian dancers were in town, but tonight we got an actual lesson. They were fun before, but they are *super* cool when you sort of know what's going on.
In college, the folk dancers were not people I hung out with. They didn't shower that often. A lot of the guys wore skirts. They did a lot of random dances that weren't much to look at. I'm a little afraid of becoming one of them. I'm hoping what will save me is the fact that the men wore pants. Also, nobody smelled funny.

I forgot to mention the cooles thing about the telespringar - it's in 2/4, but with three steps to the measure. So it goes ONEandtwoANDthreeandFOURand ONEandtwoANDthreeandFOURand. It's easy as long as you don't think about it.
Last night OleNelson was trying to get someone to delve into the world of people who play online role-playing games. I was a candidate due to my exposure to such communities at the AlmaMater. However, I'm now thinking that you're a prime candidate, what with the actual experience with folk dancing and all. :)
I know, I'm afraid that I'm in danger of losing all the points for coolness that I'd so carefully stockpiled over the years. All of that, blown in one blog post about folkdancing. Sigh. But it was so much fun! And I still shower! I promise! Oh...actually, I haven't technically showered today...but it's Sunday, so that's ok, right? I'm still in my pajamas. It is ok, right? Yes? Please?
