So I'm thinking about getting an iPod. I want one because...well, everyone else has one, and they're cute, and my car doesn't have a CD player, and I want to carry my rehearsal CDs around with me (and I don't want to dig out a walkman), and I never seem to have the right music at work. Is that bad? Because three hundred bucks is a lot of cash. Like, a WHOLE lot.

Apple has pulled off the most incredible feat of consumerism. To convince so many people to spend so much money on something frivolous - marketing genius.

This brings me to two questions: what should I get engraved on it? or, alternatively: What charity should I send the money to instead? I'm thinking public health, I'm thinking sub-saharan Africa. Ooh...third question: can I donate money to public health in Africa, or does that compromise my objectivity? Hm.

You certainly can't donate money to a health organization - then you're part of the story and I'll always have to read your stuff with "Yeah - but she doesn't want Africans to die," nagging at me.

My wife has a 1gb shuffle that's perfect for what she wants out of it - not organization and easy access to everything she (well, I) has on CD, but just some portable music for running and public transportation. Her shuffle fits 250 songs, which lasts about 15 hours - plenty for her.

Or you could get the Nano, so you could at least pick what you want to listen to. I think the Shuffle would drive me nuts. But then, I like control.

But I say go all the way - get the iPod. I LOVE my 40GB baby, Sebastian (yes, it has a name), and I don't know anyone who doesn't - you have your entire music collection with you all the time! Plus, you could get a nifty recorder attachment and use it as a voice recorder if you wanted to - thus making it a business expense! If they haven't already gotten you a recorder, that is...

Ooooh, business expense! I like the way you think, Spice. I was thinking 20 gig...the nanos are (a) not as cute as the minis and (b) 50 bucks less than the 20 gig, so why not go all the way.

The recorder deal works amazingly well - I have one for mine (unfortunately, I didn't have a business to buy it for me so thanks, mom!). You should totally go for it - you won't regret it...

I love mine. Not only because it's totally portable but also because I can plug it into my wave radio and rock out my bedroom as I'm getting ready for sleepy-time.
