So I'm in this Christmas performance thing. It's hard to explain, but basically it's folky and super fun. This year's theme is Scandinavia, so we're singing in Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, and Finnish. (The men get to sing in Icelandic, too.) Finnish turns out to be really hard. The vowels are easy, but the consonants are different from English. I find it much harder to modify consonants than vowels. I feel like there's pretty much just one way to pronounce "p" but - well - I'm wrong. Fortunately, the Finnish music is just stunning, especially this one piece by a contemporary Finnish composer whose name has a lot of vowels in it.
And if you're going to be in my area the second or third week of December, you should come see me, Miss Shirley and G-dog dance around on stage. We'll be in assorted national costumes! It's going to rock!

Oooo! Which nation are you? Do you get to wear the candles on your head in the traditional St. Lucia's day outfit?
I always wanted to do the St. Lucia Day thing (candles! hot cross buns!), and my mom would never go for it - sigh...
I'm Finnish, which I'm kind of bummed about, because I have the whole Norway connection. The Swedish women do get to wear candles for St. Lucia, but I hear they're not going to be real candles. Which is probably wise, with all the flowy headdresses and wigs and whatnot.
Well, that depends. Are the folks marketing it as a cultural event or a pyrotastic spectacular? Wooo!
Yeah, pyrotastic spectacular! St. Lucia can have rockets coming out of her head while she brings "hot cross buns" that have fireworks inside!
Wow...I'll suggest that to the director. Tickets are $18 to $40 - wouldn't you like to come to D.C. this December, see the pyrotastic spectacular...and celebrate my big birthday?
Ok, now I'm Norwegian. I'm happy.
