down to the wire

Deadline is in one hour. If you could just send mental messages out to people to return my calls, that would be great.

This morning I talked to a guy who rode out the hurricane on the roof of a house across I-90 from the coast in Mississippi. He has a bad heart. His condo is gone. Now he's in a hospital in Mobile, Alabama. He says has nothing but his flip-flops and the shorts he was wearing.

One of my co-worker's son-in-law is in emergency medicine in Mississippi - he's sleeping today after four days without any, but apparently he said that the area they're working is has gone from rescue-and-recovery to just recovery. A high-level government person also reportedly told them something to the effect of, "Now, listen, I believe in trials and courts, but if you feel like you need to dish out some Mississippi justice, no one here's gonna question you."

And if he wakes up and wants to talk to a reporter, I'm his girl.

He said he won't be able to get in touch with his daughter or son-in-law again until this weekend, but he'll definitely ask them about it -
