an observation

I think that if, at this age, I still have to count on my knuckles to figure out how many days are in May, I'm probably never going to learn how long the months are.

How do you do the months, dear reader? Do you just know? Do you remember the rhyme? Does anyone other than me do the thing with the knuckles?

I do the rhyme too. What's the knuckle thing? (I'm a teacher, you know. The more tricks, the better.)

You hold up your left hand in a fist pointing away from you (this is hard to explain in words) and count from left to right - January is the base of your pinky, February is in the valley to the right of that, March is on the hill at the base of your ring finger, etc. Long months are on the hills, short months are in the valleys. When you get to the pointer finger you do July and August and start back. Remind me and I'll show you sometime. :)

I don't think I ever need to know how many days are in a month unless I'm in a situation where I'm looking at a calendar (in which case, problem solved!). I didn't know the knuckle trick, though - awesome!

(Did you know that the first letters of July-November spell my first name? Now you do.)

Sara taught me that knuckle thing a few years ago. I like it--it gives a much better idea of the pattern than that rhyme I can never remember.

Before that, uh, I guess I always just had to look it up.

Don't feel bad. I totally do the knuckle thing - always have.

Oh, and J.Bro, do you recall which fictional child-detective character solved a mystery using that very fact?

Oh, TOWWAS, but I start from the front (pointer finger) and go backwards. Maybe it's a midwest thing...

Could be, Grrrbear - I learned in the south.

Random (only) brother, I guess that just goes to show that Gloria Dei Lutheran Preschool gave a superior education to...dang it, I've forgotten the funny name of the school you went to in England. It was something like Ramblebottom or Crumbleberry.

Grrrbear - of course it's child-genius Encyclopedia Brown! Solving mysteries, fending off bullies, and teaching me facts, all at the same time!

I used to know the 30 days rhyme, now I get lost after the word "September." I happen to know for one reason or another how many days are in January, February, May, July, September, October and December. The other months I look at a calendar.

I think the only ones I know are February and December. The others I have to count.
