office of security

Last night I was on my way home from Miss Shirley's when I saw a bunch of flashing lights up ahead. This is on the 2-block stretch of sketchiness, so this was not that surprising, and actually a little reassuring - it was 1:30 a.m. and I'd just as soon have a bunch of cops around when I go through that bit of the route. As I turned onto M Street, I saw a lot of police cars, a lot of cops, no apparent bad guys, and a bunch of white things all over the street. Turned out the cops were collecting pieces of paper and putting them in big clear plastic bags. I was mildly tempted to open my door and grab one while I was stopped at the light, but instead I settled for staring and figured out that many of them were pages of signatures that said "OFFICE OF SECURITY" across the top.

not so secure, i guess. at first i thought you were talking about this area of sketchyness . . . then i realized that it's only a few blocks away. you know, they're building luxury condos at 4th and K NW [with a gym that we're designing]. i don't know who would want to spend $400,000 to live across the street from that mess.

Well, that whole area is gentrifying. In fact, S.Vix lives only a few blocks away! I just don't totally love driving through Sursum Corda at 1:30 a.m. by myself. (But I do it all the time anyway.)

Hey--who're you calling sketchy?

I love that that teeny neighborhood has its own name--a long-ish Latin name, at that. (Right? Latin?) I bet in 15 years it will be way trendy.

Heh. I think it's just the name of the low-income housing develoment...see the Wikipedia entry for how it got named after something in the Latin Mass. And I feel way less sketchy driving through your neighborhood than on that block.
