I finished another book! On the recommendation of N.Lu, I read In Her Shoes - you may know it as a movie starring Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette, and Shirley MacLaine - and it was pretty outstanding summer reading. Usually I read the book before I see the movie, but in this case I'd seen the movie first. This meant I was picturing Cameron Diaz all the time, even when she went on this big adventure that wasn't in the movie. Both were excellent. In fact, I may have even liked the movie more, because Toni Collette is like Bill Nighy - I would watch either one of them read the phone book or slice bread or whatever.
The book is fluffy, but...what's wrong with fluff? There's drama. There's shoes. People keep deep, dark secrets. Someone demonstrates impressive coping skills for a learning disability. And everyone winds up happy in the end, if they deserve to be.
I've been neglecting my New Yorkers and Entertainment Weeklies while I've been on this book-reading kick. Has anything happened in the literary or entertainment worlds that I should be aware of?

If you're going to watch _The Illusionist_ then you should consider reading some Steven Millhauser if you haven't. He wrote the short story on which the movie is based.
