settlers of cataan

So, it is basically impossible for me to go anywhere in D.C. without running into people I know. Yesterday afternoon I was killing time before that holiday party and saw someone I know at Starbucks. We'd been trying to get together so she could teach me to play Settlers of Cataan, and this was the result:

...Today I went downtown for two hours in the middle of the day to sit in that same Starbucks and play a board game with the friend, her husband (above), and a friend of theirs who was visiting from out of town. It made me wish I had weeks off with nothing to do more often. Like, say, all the time. Except then I would need to have all my friends quit working, too (or be willing, like this friend, to take two-hour board-game lunches), and I don't see that happening.

Oh my god, my favorite game!!!!! Wait till you start playing "Cities and Knights of Catan"!!!! So awesome. I just got a new game called "Caylus," hope it's interesting. and I have also been playing a fun one called "Princes of Florence" that I have enjoyed. Yay fun board games. J.po. introduced me to "Ticket to Ride," and I promptly bought my own copy and have played it to pieces already. love games!!!!!

Oh wow, I don't know any of those! But I can heartily recommend Bohnanza and Carcassone.

"Cities and Knights" is an expansion kit off "Settlers." It's a bit complicated to learn, but oh-so-awesome. Everyone works together to build knights, and defend the island against a pirate that attacks every so often. And you can use your knights to chase the robber away and make it go towards other players, and your knights can attack each others' knights... If you don't have enough knights, the pirate will raze cities to the ground... SO FUN!

I've never even heard of this game, but it sounds a little too D&D for me to believe it's actually cool. Can your knights get +2 armor with the Spell of Eternal Enchantment?

Settlers=cool. D&D=not cool.

TOWWAS, next time you're out visitin, we'll have a Settlers marathon with Sophist, Bikeboy, and Jiggity.

Po, that sounds heavenly. Although I'm really bad at Settlers - this was the first time I'd played.
