Check out what I got in the mail today. On the Google personalized homepage for the last month or so, they had this series of puzzles you could do as a promotion for The Da Vinci Code. Each one vaguely related to the movie - some actually required to watch trailers on Google Video. They were a fun little diversion, and I was sure to get on there right at the time when they released the 24th puzzle. (Google was crazy slow that day, and it involved an anagram, so all the anagram sites were slow, too.)
I guess I was among the first 10,000 people to finish the last puzzle, because I just got this thingy in the mail. It's for sending coded messages, and apparently it's a replica of one in the movie. It's really heavy. I think I might have to use it to solve one more puzzle. After I do that, I'm not quite sure what to do with it, since I don't know of anyone else who has one.
It was a very clever little marketing campaign. It almost made me interested enough to see the movie. And look at me: I'm taking part by blogging about it. I feel like I should counteract this by telling you not to go see The Da Vinci Code.
Don't go see The Da Vinci Code!

I just found a secret message hidden inside it! And discovered that they'll determine the winner based on skill. Oops. Somehow I don't think that, of the 10,000 people competing, I'll be the fastest one to finish the final puzzle. (Which will be available on Friday.)
That is a fun gimmick as far as gimmicks go! Personally I'm looking forward to the movie. The book was a rollicking piece of good fun, and Audrey Tautou is cute as a button. AND they got to shoot in the real Louvre. How fun is that!
